ABOUT MOUNTAIN STATE LAND
Mountain States’ roots run deep in West Virginia’s land and timber industry. Mr. R.P. "Dick" Grist began purchasing land and timber in West Virginia’s southern coal fields in 1949. A graduate of the Iowa State Forestry School, Mr. Grist was a driving force in the industry until his retirement in 1992.
Mr. Grist’s three sons and his son-in-law graduated from the West Virginia University School of Forestry in the 1970’s. Robert, founder of Grist Lumber, Inc., is now retired after nearly 20 years in the hardwood lumber business. Mike continues his 30 year career with a major forest products company with operations in West Virginia. Son-in-law, Ed, works as a forester in Illinois.
Richard worked several years as a forester in North Carolina and then spent 17 years buying land and timber for Grist Lumber. Richard is president of Mountain State Land & Timber and oversees both the Timber and Real Estate Divisions.
Richard’s son Paul, has recently finished college at Virginia Tech and now works for Mtn. State. Paul is also a recent graduate of the Nashville Auction School. We are a forestry family committed to sustainable forest practices which assures the next generations' needs will be met.
We realize not everyone is ready to harvest their timber. It may be tied up in an estate or you do not need the income right now. That's OK with us. We are in business for the long term and hope to do business with you in the future. However, we would still enjoy meeting you and discussing your management goals for your property.
